Charged for the murder are his 13-year-old half-brother, a 13-year-old friend, and a 20-year-old community college student.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe, Mendes was a "significant drug dealer" of the highly addictive opioid painkiller OxyContin, a drug that is implicated in hundreds of overdose deaths, thousands of addictions across the country, and soaring demands for OxyContin detox and rehab programs from people of all ages and walks of life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The teenager was murdered, the D.A. said, for the $10,000 cash he had on hand that he had earned peddling drugs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;OxyContin, closely related to morphine and heroin, is normally prescribed for moderate to severe chronic pain. The drug comes in time-release tablets of varying strengths, but most addicts crush the tablets to defeat the time release mechanism, and snort or inject the drug for a quicker high.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In West Yarmouth, not far from where 16-year-old Jordan Mendes was dealing OxyContin, Benjamin Carpenter and his wife Valarie Campos were arrested for dealing OxyContin, which police allege they sold to support their own OxyContin addictions. The couple raked in more than $500,000 during 2007 and 2008 selling OxyContin, said the cops. At $6 to $20 a pill, depending on its strength, that's a lot of deadly OxyContin reaching the streets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you average the cost at $13 a pill, Carpenter and Campos put more than 38,460 OxyContin tablets into illegal circulation. The Drug Enforcement Administration says OxyContin is diverted by "well-organized doctor shopping rings, forged and/or altered prescriptions, and diversion from individuals' prescriptions."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We don't know where Carpenter and Campos got their illicit supplies, and the exact amount of OxyContin being diverted for illicit drug sales across America, is not public knowledge. But it must be a staggering number, when you consider that OxyContin is now commonly available from drug dealers on the streets and in the schools of almost every city and town in the country.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps Purdue Pharmaceuticals, the drug's maker, knows how much of its deadly painkiller is reaching the wrong people, but they aren't saying. Purdue, you may recall, was fined $634 million by the government last year for lying to officials about how addictive and dangerous OxyContin really is.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the streets, heroin addicts who already have high opioid tolerances routinely take OxyContin as a temporary fix when they can't find a source for heroin. Some reportedly stay with OxyContin as a permanent drug of choice. OxyContin is essentially heroin or morphine, but because it hasn't been cut with unknown amounts of unknown substances, addicts feel safer with OxyContin -- they know how much heroin-like drug they're getting, and it's pure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But OxyContin detox centers report that OxyContin isn't just being abused by hard-core heroin addicts. The drug is affecting everyone from white-collar executives to medical professionals to veterans to college students, teenagers and even seniors and sub-teens -- they're all turning up in increasing numbers needing OxyContin detox.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Quite a few people with legal prescriptions for OxyContin, who take it to manage real pain, have become physically dependent on OxyContin. A detox might be just the thing the body is in need of.&lt;br /&gt;But how is this done? An ideal way to start is to fast, but this doesn't appeal to many because most people need solid food in their bodies on a daily basis. Today he will be sharing with us information on under and over eating, energy, sex and love on a raw food diet. &lt;br /&gt;Raw Summit Excerpt with Matt Monarch, a raw food specialist and author of Raw Spirit. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: How are your energy levels? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: My energy levels are completely excellent. Iâ€™ve more energy now than I ever had in my entirely life. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: What exactly is this kind of the systematically under eating that you talk about in the book? Is that a little of bit different? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Systematically under eating is when you just get enough food to maintain in a sense. This is kind of like fasting. This is like your body detoxifying. So, I look at hunger as a detoxification regulator; let me give you another example, if you were to take a cocaine addict that does cocaine twice a day, theyâ€™re going to crave it twice a day. If they go down to once a day theyâ€™re going to go through withdrawal symptoms. Theyâ€™re going to detox so they want that fix and it is the same thing with food. So, in essence systematically under eating is if Iâ€™m eating 3 meals a day and Iâ€™m eating a certain amount of this meal every single day thatâ€™s what most people do everyday. Eating less than that amount to where you still have a bit of hunger and you have more energy and then as you to continue to do that, your body is going to continually push you forward and then youâ€™re going to continually need less and less food. This is kind of what systematic under eating is and this is like a really key tool for longevity. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Okay and this is just part of transitioning or just all the time? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Well, I mean it is a good goal to aim for. I mean weâ€™re totally going into advanced stuff here; for example when I first became raw, you will not believe what I was eating. David Wolf talks about eating 9 avocadoes; was doing the same thing. I was actually at the lecture and then thereâ€™s this man who went 100% raw, lost 50 pounds, was doing amazing, was healing from the degenerative diseases and during the lecture, he raises his hand and he confesses it to the entire room he (would) eat a jar of almond butter everyday and then pass out. At some point youâ€™re going to need to gain responsibility to get the full benefit of the raw food diet. Just like Iâ€™m not eating like 4 avocadoes anymore, this guy isnâ€™t eating a jar of almond butter. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Right! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: So, when I first become raw; I almost have this no-holds-barred attitude. I went crazy over eating. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Right! So, what are you over eating? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Let me tell you what my typical evening meal was. I would take two huge salad huge bowls and put them right in front of me, and then, I would take a huge head of Romaine lettuce and cut it up to shreds and put them in one of the bowl, and then maybe squeeze them some lemon on top of that. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Okay! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: In the other bowl, I would go to the California Farmersâ€™ Market where this heirloom tomatoes are. They taste like fruit practically. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Yes! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: I would literally take like 10 of these tomatoes, cut them up and then maybe throw dole this salty seaweed and just put amount of that on top of the tomatoes. Maybe with some olives and I would take 3 large avocados. Iâ€™m not talking about the avocado you get from whole foods. Iâ€™m talking the Farmersâ€™ Market avocados that are enormous. I would put them all on top of that Romaine lettuce and lemon in that other bowl. And I would just squeeze it with my hands until it is became nothing, and then I would take the other tomatoes and the dole, and olives and I would pour that on top of that. This is the most amazing food. And I literally eat that every single night, probably for 3 years. Thatâ€™s how I did it. Thatâ€™s how I went raw. Now these days, I would never do more than one avocado. But thatâ€™s what they have to do. I mean people have to look and you know worry about, are you now doing too much fruit. A lot of people tend to do it. They overdo the fruit and they come into issues in the long run. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Yes, what are some of those issues with the overdoing? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: What happens is sugar is an ideal ingredient for fermentation, and when youâ€™re continually eating sugar like that, you develop fermentation and your body becomes overly acidic as the years go by. Your body starts to leak alkaline salt from the skeletal frame, and people start running into tooth erosion who eat a lot of fruit. I see it all the time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Really. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Yes. And peopleâ€™s hair have fallen out. I notice when I eat a lot of fruit, I start to smell. Iâ€™m running like a 100 miles per hour. You can get away with more fruits if youâ€™re going to be exercising massive amount because youâ€™re using the energy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: What are some of the eating disorders that some raw foodist experience? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Okay, I never had a food issue in my entire life when I became 100% raw. Certain things started to happen. I was like an alien in my own body; it is like I belong to another planet. And there were times I would just over eat trying to fill my stomach up, trying to get that feeling I used to get when I eat cooked food. And then sometimes I would start doing that with fruits, sugar fruit. You take a bite off a persimmon or a fresh fig coming straight from a free. It is so amazing that sugar hit you and then you just can't stop eating it especially a new eon like myself in to the raw food movements 7 years ago. I would just eat it until my stomach was out ten feet. And you know, that causes a situation in your system. You wouldnâ€™t want to be around me for 2 days probably because of all the gas that would be imitating from the system would be crazy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: I got it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: So, what would happen is, I would get these feelings in my stomach, and after a while I donâ€™t want to experience anymore; I want it to be in public. So, I would tell myself, â€œIâ€™m not going to over eat on fruit this timeâ€. And you know, what would happen? I would start eating a lot of fruits and I couldnâ€™ t stop myself. It wasnâ€™t my decision to make, I guess. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Yes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: So, a couple of times I was actually still upset with myself after doing this. On my way home from the Farmers Market, I remember like belching and like food would come back up to my mouth and then, I would just spit it out. And then, I would do it again and again, thinking that it would help entire the situation that I thought I was going to experience. The true problem about it all was the fanaticism I was going through. When I first became raw, I was still fanatical. I never went to a raw-food restaurant. I wanted to have the perfect digestion I possibly could. I never did a bad food combination for the first 4 years. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Wow! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: It was crazy. It wasnâ€™t healthy. Then after about 4 years, Dr. Fred Bisci and a good friend of mine Pam Ethan, kind of broke me in the sense. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: What are some of the things that they said to you that kind of lighten you up a little bit? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Every once in a while it will be like Matt, you know youâ€™re kind of fanatical about it. And I would just be sitting in there like ï¿½ï¿½" Whatever. He would just lead by example, and I just started hanging out with them more and more and soon I eat one in raw-food restaurant and okay, this isnâ€™t too bad. Before I knew it, I was eating mounds and mounds of raw junk. So, if I ever even go to a raw food restaurant now, I get a runny nose. I mean, I donâ€™t kill myself over; I just deal with it. But it was a 180 for me because I went the other extreme in a sense. I would over eat on raw-food restaurant all the time. And then, I start eating cacao, that was... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Tell me about that. The cacao. You have like a giggle behind it, and I want to know what that was about. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Alright. Cacao. I love cacao. When I gave my girlfriend a cocoa, watch out! You know what Iâ€™m talking about. I make sure that I have all my stuff all the time and so, when I kind of did the cacao in massive amounts for about a month it was stimulating me to the point of where it was giving me the vitality to give off excess toxins. So I stop doing cacao and I noticed now that whenever I do it, it is almost like a party dress for me. It's like what wine used to do for me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Yes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Yes. So, if someone is eating a massive amount, if theyâ€™re eating cacao in replace the refined sugar, I'd rather see someone do that. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Yes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: And some people don't have problems with the cacao. But some people do. Those types of people got to be careful and I'm afraid there are a lot of people can't handle that sort of type of thing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Right, you know the stimulant of it or just some... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Yes, yes. The stimulant of it. Some people might have ADD issues and its does not work with their structure for some reason but some people are fine with that. I mean some people take it too far. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Yes. So, you pressed briefly on sex and the raw diet and it's in your book... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Yes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: That's a cool topic. Let's get into this. Why don't you tell me a little about that? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: When I was a cooked-food eater I was more of like a wild animal in a sense, not that I'm not now but it was more of like every girl that walk by me, I check out her behind, I would be nonstop doing like 360s around... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Uh-huh. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: And to be honest with you, every single day, I actually took care of myself. I had this need to ejaculate. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Got you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: You know. So, when I became 100% raw, I went through a complete transformation. Now, when I look at a woman, it's more of like a looking at a work of art in a sense. And I'm not so crazy about it and also, my desire for ejaculation has decreased. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Interesting. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Now, don't get me wrong, when I'm with my woman. Yes, I mean there's no stopping me. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Right. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: But I'm just more of the way I think we were meant to be. It's more of a love thing now. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kevin: Okay and you think that's the direct relation between the food? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Matt: Definitely. You have to be doing the raw food diet correctly to experience this thing the way you're supposed to be experiencing it. If the doctors know, they apparently aren't telling their patients - because Internet message boards and forums are filled with pleas for help from folks all trying to get off antidepressants. Someone should tell them there's little they can do to avoid antidepressant withdrawal unless they enter a medical drug detox center.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Duke team's study, supported by the National Institutes of Health, was published in The Archives of Internal Medicine way back in October, 1999. The study involved 156 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) who were divided into three groups: exercise, medication, or a combination of medication and exercise. To everyone's surprise, the non-drug exercise group had exactly the same results as those of the other groups - without the side-effects of the antidepressants and without risking chemical dependency and the need for drug detox. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The effectiveness of exercise for depression is well known. Even the Mayo Clinic devotes an entire web page to how exercise helps depression and anxiety, detailing tips and strategies to help depressed people make an end-run around the lethargy that can keep someone in their chair instead of on their feet. Even a little exercise, they say, can make a tremendous improvement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course some physicians reportedly do recommend exercise for patients presenting with symptoms of depression. But far too many doctors - the vast majority - continue to prescribe antidepressants instead of helping motivate their patients to enter inexpensive, safe exercise programs - a solution that will never lead to drug detox. One only suspects it is easier to pop a pill than get up out of bed and start exercising, especially when you're feeling depressed. Many doctors may be worried that patients won't stick to the program, so it's easier to prescribe another pointless antidepressant and hope patients won't become dependent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Great Britain, where antidepressant use requiring drug detox is as big a problem as it is here, there's been something of a mini-campaign to get doctors on the exercise-for-depression band wagon. Several years ago, the country's Mental Health Foundation surveyed physicians and found only 5% prescribing exercise for depression. An updated survey this year shows 22% of doctors are now prescribing exercise for their depressed patients. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is good news in the UK, a country with government funded national health care. Treatment of depression with exercise instead of drugs leads to none of the common and often very expensive complications of drug therapy, such as emergency handling of side effects, potentially life-threatening drug interactions, and having to go through a medical drug detox program to get off the drugs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exercise is a potent weapon and should be accorded more importance in the U.S, physician's arsenal in the battle against depression. Doctors should take a more proactive role in motivating their depression patients to get on and stick to a prescribed exercise regime, one tailored exclusively for their level of physical health. Nearly a dozen other trade names and generic versions all contain the same basic formula that is driving unprecedented numbers of famous, infamous and every-day men, women and even children into dependency, addiction and, barring unexpected tragic fatalities, recovery through drug detox.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vicodin is Abbott's trademarked brand of the narcotic analgesic containing hydrocodone and acetaminophen, easily identifiable because the name is right on the tablet - "Vicodin", "Vicodin ES" or "Vicodin HP". The acetaminophen in the formula boosts the pain relieving effects of the addictive narcotic hydrocodone. But there are dozens of other brands, and also generic versions, all containing the same basic addictive formulation. Reportedly, production of this drug approaches 20 tons annually, and no matter what it's called, "Vicodin addiction" leads to thousands of people entering drug detox every year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although law enforcement and the media frequently refer to "Vicodin" when reporting drug busts, addictions, trips to drug detox by the rich and/or famous, or tragic fatalities from deadly overdoses and drug interactions, it's likely that some other trade name, or even a cheap generic version, was actually present. Regardless of the brand or version, the progression from legitimate pain treatment to dependence to addiction to drug detox, and often from there to extended treatment in a drug rehab program, is always the same if the warning signs of dependence and addiction are unknown or ignored.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The rich and famous, and even famous fictional characters, have been falling prey to the addictive nature of hydrocodone in all its formulations ever since it was developed nearly 100 years ago in Germany. Vicodin, although the most famous brand of the drug, is far from the only culprit behind all the stories of celebrated addictions, drug detox and fatalities. For example, generic hydrocodone was listed among the drugs that killed actor Heath Ledger just a couple of weeks ago. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the name "Vicodin" has percolated its way into our popular culture. The rapper Eminem has "Vicodin" tattooed on his arm, a testament to its illicit allure on the streets where the genuine Vicodin brand is actually rarely seen. And aging rocker Ozzie Osbourne related stories of his own Vicodin addiction. Conservative radio chat-show host Rush Limbaugh, who began taking Vicodin for back pain, wound up with an addiction that cost him $300,000 in three years, according to his former housekeeper. And Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain, admitted in 1994 to a years-long Vicodin addiction during which she stole hundreds of pills from the medical charity she ran. These alleged Vicodin addictions all led to drug detox and rehab, but we don't really know if it was Vicodin or generics. And who really cares? The results were the same - lives torn apart by addiction. You can be sure that if there were a real Dr. Greg House - the main character on the Fox medical drama "House" and notorious for his uncontrollable "Vicodin addiction" - he wouldn't be popping branded Vicodin all day for his chronic leg pain. Cost-conscious hospitals stock the far less expensive generic versions of the drug, and House's gargantuan appetite would certainly set off alarms in the budget department if it was genuine Vicodin. And as we see every week on the show, a full-blown addiction can create a difficult situation where the addict refuses drug detox and suggestions for alternate approaches to handling the pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just to be sure, check your own medicine cabinet. The trade names for the same formula as Vicodin include Anexsia, Anolor DH5, Bancap HC, Dolacet, Hydro, Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, T-Gesic, Vadunk and others. There are all kinds of generic brands out there too, so the words to look for on the label are "hydrocodone" and either "acetaminophen" or "paracetamol." It is prescribed by the millions primarily for pain, but millions more find their way to the illicit market where they're used to get high. So please store it somewhere secure, and be careful when taking it because dependence and addiction are always a risk. However, make sure that you are getting the real McCoy since many restaurants in the USA do not use the genuine paste. &lt;br /&gt;The wasabi is a plant of the cruciferous family, the same family as cabbage, broccoli, turnip, radish, horseradish and mustard, and is native to Japan and Korea and now grown on the Pacific coast of Canada. It grows best in temperate to cold climates, especially in mountainous areas where there are plenty of cold streams. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anybody who regularly enjoys sashimi and sushi should be familiar with the wasabi rhizome, that green lump of paste lying on the side of the plate. It is hot and fiery, although not in the same way as the chilli pepper that is fiery on the tongue and in the mouth. This tends to affect the sinuses more, and leaves a sweetish taste once the initial heat has dissipated. However, it is not always what it should be. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The last comment there refers to the practise, especially in the USA, of using dyed common horseradish as wasabi paste, so be careful of that since the two are not equivalent in the health benefits they impart to your body. Although of the same family as the horseradish, and sometimes termed the Japanese horseradish, ordinary horseradish does not have the same health benefits as genuine wasabi, and does not contain the same active ingredients so do not confuse the two. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Real wasabi is normally used grated, and there are specific techniques that should be used to grate wasabi rhizomes to bring out the fullness of the flavour. True grated wasabi should be of a natural pale greenish color rather than the brighter green normally associated with sushi restaurant wasabi. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Traditionally, wasabi rhizome is used as a condiment with sushi, although their leaves can also be used in salad dressings and or as a delicacy pickled in soy sauce or sake brine. The genuine vegetable is difficult to cultivate which explains why ordinary horseradish is dyed and used in its stead, and the vast majority of non-Japanese do not know the difference because it is likely to be all they have consumed under the name of wasabi. The health benefits of the genuine article, however, are considerable greater. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So that's what it is, but what does it do? What are the health benefits of wasabi rhizomes and why are they considered to be so good for your liver? Wasabi rhizomes contain substances that are very effective in detoxifying you liver, and that are also very strong antioxidants that provide you with good overall health benefits in their capacity to destroy the free radicals created by the pollution of modern living.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The active antioxidants in the rhizome are precursors of isothiocyanates, which are known as phytochemicals. These are chemicals that can protect or prevent diseases through its antioxidant properties. The term 'precursor' means that the isothiocyanates are synthesized by your body from the nutrients contained in the wasabi rhizome. Other examples of phytochemicals that you may have heard of are carotenoids, flavonoids and polyphenols that also possess antioxidant properties. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other antioxidants are vitamins A and E, which is why these are used in anti-wrinkle creams, since their anti-oxidant effect helps to prevent the free radicals destroying the skin cells in the dermis and epidermis that leads to the wrinkles associated with aging. That is where most of the chemical reactions take place that are essential for life. If your liver is unhealthy you can develop diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis, and a healthy liver is essential for life let alone a healthy life.
